Wan Hai Lines Strengthens Japan Routes with $87M Osaka Terminal Acquisition
Wan Hai Lines, a leading Taiwanese container carrier, is expanding its presence in Japan with the acquisition of Terminal C9 at Osaka Port for approximately $87 million, aiming to bolster its intra-Asia shipping network and enhance operational control.
The Taipei-based carrier confirmed in a Taiwan Stock Exchange filing that the board approved the purchase last week. The deal includes the right-of-use asset for the C9 container terminal and associated facilities, in partnership with Mitsui Warehouse Port & Transport. Spanning 129,959 square meters, the terminal is a strategic asset for improving terminal efficiency and securing cargo capacity on key Japan–Taiwan shipping routes.
Terminal C9 is located in Osaka Port’s Sakishima (Nanko) district, a central hub for Japan’s Asia-facing trade. The terminal operates alongside others in the area, including C1 to C4 and C8, under Hanshin Port management, with modern cranes, container yards, and logistics facilities such as the Nanko International Container Center.
Wan Hai’s enhanced control over terminal operations is expected to improve schedule reliability, streamline port workflows, and strengthen its foothold in short-haul Asian trades. This move builds on the carrier’s previous investments in Japan, including the Honmoku D4 terminal lease in Yokohama, giving Wan Hai greater leverage in two of Japan’s most important container ports.
Ranked 11th globally by capacity according to Alphaliner, Wan Hai is recognized for its intra-Asia operations and is among the largest regional container carriers. The C9 terminal is also served by Yang Ming, Interasia, and CK Line, further highlighting its strategic importance in regional shipping.
