IMO Launches Open Call for Shipping Companies to Join NextWave Alliance to Upskill Seafarers
The International Maritime Organization has launched an open call inviting global shipping companies to join the NextWave Alliance and support the upskilling of seafarers through expanded onboard training opportunities.
As part of its workforce development strategy, IMO will host a dedicated workshop on 9 April 2026 at its headquarters in London to explore the global expansion of the NextWave Seafarers Project. The initiative is designed to provide essential onboard training placements for cadets from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), helping to address the global shortage of qualified seafarers while building a future-ready maritime workforce.
The NextWave Seafarers Project has been developed with support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Bahri. The pilot phase has already delivered meaningful cadet training placements with Bahri, one of Saudi Arabia’s leading maritime companies. The next stage of the project seeks to expand industry participation and scale the training model globally through the formation of the NextWave Alliance.
The upcoming London workshop will showcase key achievements and insights from the pilot phase, offering shipping companies the opportunity to engage directly with the project team and participating cadets. Companies attending the event will be able to learn about the project’s global vision, receive practical guidance on hosting cadets, understand application and operational requirements, and take part in bilateral discussions regarding participation.
By joining the NextWave Alliance, shipping companies can contribute to a scalable and inclusive training framework while strengthening their commitment to seafarer development and fair treatment at sea. The initiative aims to build a diverse, skilled maritime workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of the global shipping industry.
Shipping companies interested in participating are required to confirm attendance by 13 March 2026 via email. Bilateral meetings can be arranged, and a detailed briefing pack will be shared with confirmed participants.
