CAIRO –Egypt has confirmed the deaths of at least three of its nationals after a migrant boat carrying dozens of irregular migrants sank en route to Greece.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the vessel was carrying 50 irregular migrants, including 21 Egyptians. Three Egyptians have died, while 18 remain missing. The ministry is closely coordinating with Greek authorities to support search efforts and expedite the repatriation of the deceased.
The Egyptian Embassy in Athens is actively facilitating arrangements to return the bodies to Egypt as quickly as possible. Authorities have reiterated warnings to citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid illegal migration networks, and refrain from irregular travel to protect their safety.
Greek authorities reported that three migrants died and 20 others were rescued after the wooden boat capsized off the island of Crete on Saturday, AFP reported. Greek public broadcaster ERT confirmed the vessel overturned during a sudden movement as passengers tried to climb ladders onto a commercial vessel dispatched by the Greek Search and Rescue Center.
Survivors indicated that around 50 people were onboard. Search operations are ongoing, involving patrol boats, rescue vessels, and aircraft.
