Karachi Port Upgrade: Dredging Project Launched to Handle Mega Ships and Boost Pakistan’s Maritime Trade Growth

Pakistan has initiated a major maritime infrastructure upgrade as dredging work begins at Karachi Port, a move expected to significantly enhance port capacity, attract larger cargo vessels, and strengthen the country’s position in global shipping and logistics markets.

The development was announced by Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who confirmed that dredging of the main navigation channel by Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited is now underway. The project follows a formal agreement with Karachi Port Trust and is scheduled for completion within three months.

The dredging initiative is designed to deepen the port’s main channel, enabling it to accommodate next-generation container ships and large cargo vessels. Upon completion, the upgraded channel will support ships up to 350 meters in length with a gross registered tonnage (GRT) of 100,000, marking a significant leap in Pakistan’s maritime handling capacity and port efficiency.

Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited operates as a strategic partnership between AD Ports Group and Kaheel Terminals, tasked with managing and developing container berths 6–10 at East Wharf. The collaboration highlights growing foreign investment and international confidence in Pakistan’s port infrastructure and logistics sector.

Officials say the project will improve vessel turnaround times, increase cargo throughput, and reduce congestion, making Karachi Port more competitive in regional transshipment and international trade routes. The ability to handle larger vessels aligns with global shipping trends, where mega-ships dominate containerized trade to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

The dredging project is part of a broader government strategy to modernize Pakistan’s ports, enhance supply chain resilience, and position the country as a key maritime hub in South Asia. By upgrading critical infrastructure and expanding operational capacity, Pakistan aims to capture a larger share of global shipping traffic and boost economic growth through increased trade volumes.
