Pakistan-China Naval Exercise SEA GUARDIAN 2026 Boosts Maritime Security, CPEC Strategy and Indo-Pacific Defense Cooperation

Pakistan and China have launched a high-profile bilateral naval exercise in Karachi, reinforcing growing defense ties and maritime security cooperation in the strategically vital Arabian Sea shipping corridor. The joint drill, named SEA GUARDIAN, began as a Chinese warship arrived at Karachi port under a ceremonial escort by the Pakistan Navy, marking another milestone in expanding Pakistan-China military collaboration, naval interoperability, and Indo-Pacific maritime security strategy.

The exercise is part of a broader strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, encompassing defense cooperation, trade logistics, and large-scale infrastructure under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Key projects such as the development of Gwadar Port continue to strengthen regional connectivity, energy trade routes, and global shipping networks, making maritime cooperation increasingly critical for both nations.

According to officials, the SEA GUARDIAN naval drills aim to enhance joint maritime operations, naval combat readiness, and regional security frameworks. The exercise includes both harbor and sea-phase activities such as gunnery exercises, coordinated patrol missions, maritime interdiction operations, and knowledge-sharing sessions between naval experts. A dedicated seminar for young naval officers will also address emerging maritime threats, blue economy strategies, and modern naval warfare technologies.

Running until April 2, the joint naval exercise underscores the shared commitment of Pakistan and China to secure sea lanes, protect international trade routes, and ensure stability in the Indian Ocean region. These drills also complement Pakistan’s broader engagement in multinational maritime exercises, positioning the country as a key player in global maritime security, defense diplomacy, and strategic naval alliances.
