Keenjhar Lake Conservation Drive: 70,000 Fish Seedlings Released to Boost Aquatic Biodiversity in Thatta
In a major step toward environmental sustainability and eco-restoration, the district administration in Thatta has launched an ambitious campaign aimed at protecting natural resources and enhancing biodiversity at Keenjhar Lake.
The initiative, titled “Clean Keenjhar, Green Thatta,” was formally launched by Deputy Commissioner Sarmad Ali Bhagat, who planted saplings around the lake and oversaw the release of 70,000 fish seedlings into the water. The campaign also includes a large-scale tree plantation drive targeting 100,000 trees across the district.
Officials stated that the project focuses on environmental protection, climate resilience, and restoration of ecological balance,key factors in sustainable development and green economy growth. Special emphasis is being placed on preserving Keenjhar Lake, one of Sindh’s most important natural, historical, and tourism assets.

During his visit, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed multiple sites around the lake and received detailed briefings on ongoing conservation and anti-pollution measures. He highlighted that reducing pollution and promoting eco-friendly practices would help transform Thatta into a greener and more environmentally sustainable district.
Speaking to the media, Bhagat stressed that protecting Keenjhar Lake is a shared responsibility among government bodies, local communities, and environmental stakeholders. He also called for expanding conservation efforts to safeguard other historical and tourist destinations across Sindh.
The administration confirmed that the afforestation campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the forest department, with a strong focus on long-term maintenance and survival of planted saplings, an essential factor in successful climate change mitigation strategies.
In parallel, the fisheries department has partnered with local authorities to release approximately 70,000 fish seedlings into the lake. This move is expected to significantly boost aquatic biodiversity, strengthen the lake’s ecosystem, and support the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
