Saudi Arabia’s 1,700-Km Northern Highway Emerges as Strategic Trade Corridor Linking GCC to Europe
Saudi Arabia’s expansive Northern International Highway is rapidly gaining global attention as a critical logistics artery, strengthening overland trade routes between the Gulf region and Europe. Stretching more than 1,700 kilometers, the highway plays a central role in boosting regional connectivity, freight mobility, and cross-border supply chains, making it a key asset in the Kingdom’s growing maritime and multimodal transport ecosystem.
Recognized as one of the oldest international land routes in the Kingdom, the highway connects Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries with major regional markets including Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Türkiye, before extending further into Europe. This strategic corridor is increasingly vital for cargo transit, supporting high-volume trucking operations and enhancing trade efficiency across continents.
Originally established in 1950 as a gravel track, the route underwent major transformation in 1967 when it was paved to support the Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline) project. Over the decades, it has evolved into a high-capacity transport backbone, facilitating the seamless movement of goods and passengers across multiple borders.
Today, the highway experiences consistent year-round traffic, handling millions of travelers and a significant volume of freight trucks, particularly those engaged in transit trade between GCC nations and neighboring countries. Its infrastructure includes dual carriageways originating from Riyadh and Dammam, converging at Hafr Al-Batin, before extending north through key logistics hubs such as Rafha, Arar, and At-Turaif, ultimately reaching Al Hadithah Port on the Jordanian border.
A major branch of the highway also connects to Hail, further enhancing domestic logistics integration and regional accessibility. From Al Hadithah, the route links directly to Amman, opening gateways to Levant markets and beyond, reinforcing its role as a high-value international trade corridor.
The continued development of this highway aligns with Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy, aimed at positioning the Kingdom as a global logistics hub. Ongoing improvements focus on road quality, traffic safety, and optimized cargo flow, key factors for attracting international trade and investment.
