Egypt Accelerates Suez Canal Shipbuilding Strategy as President El-Sisi Reviews Major Maritime Projects
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reviewed the latest developments in Egypt’s maritime sector, focusing on Suez Canal navigation, shipbuilding expansion, marine manufacturing, and the modernization of strategic maritime infrastructure aimed at strengthening the country’s position in global shipping and logistics.
During a high-level meeting, President El-Sisi met with Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, and Mostafa El-Dougishy, Chairman of the South Red Sea Shipyard Company. According to the Egyptian Presidency, the President received a comprehensive briefing on navigation traffic through the Suez Canal during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, along with updates on the progress and launch schedule of several new marine units currently under construction.
President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of expanding Egypt’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities by localizing the manufacturing of marine vessels and equipment to meet the operational needs of the Suez Canal and Egyptian ports. He also highlighted the potential for increasing exports through partnerships with the private sector, reinforcing Egypt’s long-term strategy to strengthen its maritime industry and support regional shipping markets.
The President directed authorities to maintain the highest standards of quality across all projects while adhering to approved construction timelines. He also stressed the importance of implementing strict occupational safety and health measures and ensuring continuous technical training for the workforce involved in marine manufacturing.
Among the projects reviewed were the ongoing preparations for two fiberglass manufacturing facilities at the Suez Canal Company for Modern Boats, a joint venture between the Suez Canal Authority and the South Red Sea Shipyard Company. Officials reported progress in constructing several fiberglass vessels, including the completion of hulls for three cruise launches intended to serve both maritime tourism and Nile tourism operations.

The meeting also examined the implementation status of a program to construct twelve deep-sea fishing vessels under the “REZK” class. The vessels are being built using modern international technologies to enhance Egypt’s fishing fleet and maritime capabilities.
In addition, President El-Sisi reviewed the manufacturing progress of a 60-passenger river bus that will operate in Cairo Governorate, supporting inland water transport initiatives.
Officials also presented updates on the construction of the “Azm” class marine tugboats, each designed with a 90-ton bollard pull capacity. President El-Sisi reiterated the importance of full compliance with international quality and safety standards throughout the construction process.
The latest review underscores Egypt’s continued investment in maritime infrastructure, shipbuilding, inland water transport, and advanced marine manufacturing as the country works to reinforce the strategic role of the Suez Canal in global maritime trade and logistics.
