Search and Rescue Operation Underway after Vietnamese Cargo Ship Sinks in South China Sea
Rescue teams continued a major search and rescue operation in the South China Sea on Sunday after the Vietnamese-registered cargo ship Khoi Nguyen 18 sank near the disputed Fiery Cross Reef, leaving 17 crew members missing. Authorities confirmed that 45 of the 62 Vietnamese nationals onboard have been rescued after the vessel sent a distress signal on Saturday evening.
According to China’s state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), the cargo vessel encountered difficulties near Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands, a strategically important region of the South China Sea. The vessel was approximately 70 metres long with a gross tonnage of 999, highlighting the scale of the maritime emergency.
The rescue mission began after a distress flare from Khoi Nguyen 18 was detected on Saturday, July 25, by the Chinese rescue vessel Nanhai Jiu 115. Rescue teams later discovered a life raft carrying 29 survivors approximately 38 nautical miles north of Fiery Cross Reef. Continued maritime search efforts by rescue vessels and a helicopter increased the number of recovered crew members to 45.
Two rescue ships and a rescue helicopter remained deployed at the accident site as authorities continued efforts to locate the remaining missing crew members. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of maritime safety, emergency response systems, and international search and rescue cooperation in busy shipping routes.
Vietnam, China Cooperate in Maritime Rescue Response
Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its authorities immediately launched emergency response measures and coordinated with Chinese maritime rescue forces during the operation. A Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesperson expressed appreciation for China’s assistance and support in rescuing the affected crew members.
The cooperation highlights the role of regional maritime security partnerships and coordinated disaster response mechanisms in managing emergencies involving commercial shipping vessels.
Strategic South China Sea Region Faces Maritime Challenges
The cargo ship accident occurred near Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands, one of the most contested maritime areas in the world. The region, located along major international shipping routes, remains subject to overlapping territorial claims by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.
