Fishing Boat Accident Under Golden Gate Bridge Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Hospitalized
A fishing boat accident under the Golden Gate Bridge left one man dead and two others hospitalized Thursday, Sept. 17, after the vessel reportedly struck rocks near the Lime Point Historic Lighthouse and capsized in San Francisco Bay. The incident triggered a multi-agency maritime rescue involving the U.S. Coast Guard, police and local fire departments.
The maritime emergency was reported at about 6:13 a.m. local time when a caller notified authorities of a vessel in distress beneath the iconic bridge, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. The boat reportedly ran aground near Lime Point beside the bridge’s north tower, struck rocks and capsized, leaving all three people aboard with life-threatening injuries.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded with the U.S. Coast Guard, San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit, Southern Marin Fire Protection District Fireboat “Liberty” and the Sausalito Fire Department.
According to the Coast Guard, its crews rescued two people from the water, while San Francisco police officers rescued the third. The three were treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.
One of those rescued was Daniel Zhengyu Qin, 35, of San Jose, California. He was later pronounced dead, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Local reports also confirmed that Qin died after the rescue despite efforts to save him.
Investigation Underway into Vessel Collision
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fishing boat collision or why the vessel struck the rocks near the Golden Gate Bridge.
A forensic autopsy with routine toxicology testing is scheduled for next week. The examination is expected to help establish the official cause and manner of Qin’s death, which remain pending.
Following the rescue operation, officers freed the damaged vessel from the rocks and towed it to nearby Horseshoe Cove. The boat was then collected as evidence by San Francisco Police as investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Maritime Safety Focus: Multi-Agency Rescue Response
The incident highlights the importance of rapid maritime emergency response in the waters around the Golden Gate Bridge, where several agencies may be required to coordinate during a vessel accident.
The response brought together federal, municipal and local emergency services, including the U.S. Coast Guard, marine police units and fire-rescue teams. Their coordinated operation resulted in all three people being recovered from the capsized vessel and receiving emergency medical treatment.
From a maritime safety perspective, the investigation will need to establish the sequence of events that led the vessel to run aground and capsize. At this stage, authorities have not attributed the collision to any specific factor, and no definitive conclusion should be drawn before the investigation and forensic examination are completed.
Capt. Jarod Toczko, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, expressed condolences to Qin’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the efforts of the responding crews and partner agencies while recognizing the loss of life.
The cause of the vessel collision and the official cause and manner of Qin’s death remain under investigation.
