CSSC Delivers World’s First 210,000-DWT Ammonia-Fuelled Bulk Carrier

China’s Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has delivered Mineral Europa, the world’s first 210,000-DWT ammonia dual-fuel bulk carrier, to CMB.TECH. The delivery was officially marked on October 9, 2026, when the parties signed the Protocol of Delivery and Acceptance, advancing the development of green shipping technology for the global dry bulk shipping industry.

The vessel represents a significant step in maritime decarbonisation, as the shipping sector explores alternative marine fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large ocean-going ships. Ammonia can eliminate carbon dioxide emissions at the point of combustion, but its overall environmental benefits depend on how the fuel is produced and its full lifecycle emissions.

The delivery protocol was signed by Thomas De Graef, Technical Manager of CMB.TECH; Zhou Yinghui, Senior Project Manager of CSTC’s Europe Department; and Hao Dawei, Deputy Director of Beihai Shipbuilding’s Business Department.

The delivery also highlights China’s growing role in advanced shipbuilding and alternative marine fuel technology. By introducing ammonia dual-fuel propulsion in the 210,000-DWT class, the project provides a practical example of how large bulk carriers can adopt new propulsion systems as the industry works towards lower-emission maritime transport.

Beihai Shipbuilding said it would continue developing its green and smart shipbuilding business. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting global net-zero targets and China’s “dual carbon” goals of reaching peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.

The long-term contribution of ammonia-fuelled shipping will depend on fuel availability, safe handling, suitable bunkering infrastructure and verified lifecycle emissions reductions. The delivery of Mineral Europa marks an important development in the commercial deployment of alternative marine fuels for large bulk carriers.
