MSC Direct Europe Shipping Service Starts October 26
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) is set to expand direct shipping services with a new Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Europe service commencing on October 26, 2026. KPT aims to double its direct shipping services by December to reduce transshipment dependence, strengthen international trade connectivity and improve Pakistan’s maritime logistics network, Chairman retired Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed told the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday.
The expansion is part of efforts to improve port operational efficiency and supply chain performance. Ahmed said improved vessel operations could generate annual savings of Rs30–40 billion by reducing cargo unloading time from seven days to 1–1.5 days, potentially lowering logistics costs for businesses involved in international trade.

KPT is also targeting growth in ship bunkering services, with more than 160 vessels having called for bunkering. Ahmed expects the business to exceed Rs300 billion annually within two to three years, highlighting its potential contribution to Pakistan’s maritime economy.
To modernise port operations, KPT is investing Rs2–2.5 billion in artificial intelligence (AI), port automation and digital systems. The investment is intended to improve operational management and support more efficient cargo handling.
Meanwhile, KPT is pursuing major connectivity projects, including Shahrah-i-Bhutto, the KPT–Pipri Freight Corridor and the M-10 link, to ease congestion and improve freight transportation. These infrastructure initiatives, alongside digital upgrades and expanded direct shipping connections, are intended to strengthen Karachi Port’s role in Pakistan’s international trade and logistics network.
