Mozambique Passenger Vessel Fire Kills Three on Lake Niassa
Three people have died after a passenger vessel fire destroyed the Chambo on Lake Niassa while carrying 43 people, including crew members. The maritime accident occurred shortly after the vessel departed Mbamba Bay in Tanzania for Metangula in Mozambique’s northern Niassa Province, highlighting the importance of passenger vessel safety and maritime emergency preparedness.

According to Transmarítima, Mozambique’s state-owned maritime transport company, the crew activated emergency procedures after detecting the fire. Passengers evacuated to nearby vessels that came to their assistance, but three people, a child, an elderly woman and a young man, died during the rescue operation. The fire completely destroyed the Chambo, and the cause has not yet been established.
The incident underscores the importance of effective marine fire safety measures, emergency evacuation planning and reliable rescue coordination on inland waterways. A technical investigation will be essential to establish how the fire started and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatalities without drawing premature conclusions about the cause.
A technical investigation commission has been established and is expected to work with Tanzanian authorities to determine the cause of the fire and examine the rescue procedures. Transmarítima expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and transparent communication of the investigation’s findings.
