Tanker Hit by Two Projectiles off Oman, UKMTO Reports Engine Room Damage

A commercial tanker was struck by two unidentified projectiles approximately 14 nautical miles northeast of Lima, off the coast of Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The projectiles hit the vessel’s engine room, raising further maritime security concerns in the region. No casualties or environmental damage were reported.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, UKMTO confirmed that it had received a report of the incident involving the tanker. The agency said both projectiles struck the engine room, while no injuries or environmental impact had been reported at the time of its update.

The incident followed a separate attack reported earlier on Tuesday involving a traditional sailing vessel carrying an Indian crew while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The Omani Navy rescued several crew members from the sailing vessel, while Indian authorities reported that an Indian sailor had died in the incident.

Maritime Security Risks in Waters near Oman

The two incidents involved separate vessels and occurred in waters near Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Together, they highlight continuing security risks for commercial and traditional vessels operating along important regional shipping routes.

For the maritime industry, incidents involving unidentified projectiles and attacks on vessels underline the importance of maritime surveillance, crew safety and effective incident monitoring in the region.
