China Strengthens Global Maritime Power with Largest Fleet and Skilled Seafaring Workforce

China continues to solidify its position as a leading maritime power, with its massive shipping fleet and highly trained seafaring workforce driving international trade dominance. According to Ni Di, deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress and senior ship captain at State-owned China COSCO Shipping Corp, about 95% of China’s foreign trade cargo is transported by sea, while the nation’s international shipping volume accounts for nearly one-third of global maritime trade.

Speaking at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Monday, Ni highlighted that China possesses the world’s largest commercial fleet and an extensive network of world-class ports. The country has established strategic shipping routes with over 100 countries and regions, covering all major economies participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The recent opening of Chancay Port in Peru has enhanced two-way connectivity between Shanghai and Chancay, strengthening China’s global trade routes. The Port of Shanghai, a key logistics hub, has maintained its number one global ranking in container throughput for 16 consecutive years, underscoring the country’s dominance in maritime logistics.

China’s maritime sector is further empowered by its skilled seafaring workforce, with over 2 million registered seafarers, including 970,000 professionals on ocean-going vessels. This talent pool is essential for supporting China’s strategic goal of transforming from a major shipping nation into a strong and sustainable maritime power.
