Exmar Unveils World’s First Ammonia-Powered Gas Carriers, Pioneering Green Shipping
Exmar has officially named the world’s first ammonia-powered gas carriers, signaling a major step toward sustainable and low-emission shipping solutions. The two 46,000 cubic meter mid-size vessels, Antwerpen and Arlon, were built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and formally named at their Ulsan shipyard today.
These ships are the first of four units ordered by Exmar LPG France, with subsequent deliveries scheduled for May and late July. Both vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on ammonia, a promising alternative marine fuel expected to play a critical role in decarbonizing the maritime sector.
Advanced technologies onboard include shaft generators, selective catalytic reduction systems, and real-time ammonia leak detection, along with purge recovery units designed to enhance operational safety and minimize environmental risks. Industry projections suggest that ammonia could account for up to 46% of marine fuel demand by 2050, underscoring the growing importance of green shipping innovations.
By introducing ammonia-powered vessels, Exmar positions itself at the forefront of the clean energy transition in global shipping, providing a scalable solution for LNG and chemical gas transport while helping the maritime industry reduce carbon emissions and comply with stricter International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.
This milestone not only highlights Exmar’s leadership in sustainable shipping technology but also strengthens the push toward zero-carbon maritime logistics, which is rapidly becoming a top priority for shipowners, charterers, and global energy suppliers.
