Gwadar Port Achieves Major Milestone as Specialized Vessel Berths amid Regional Trade Surge

Gwadar Port has marked a significant operational milestone with the successful berthing of the specialized vessel M/V HMO LEADER (IMO 9169811), carrying 35 pieces of general transshipment cargo, reinforcing its growing role as a strategic maritime hub in South Asia.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, highlighted that the event underscores Gwadar Port’s emergence as a safe, reliable, and modern facility for international shipping lines seeking alternatives amid ongoing Gulf tensions disrupting traditional shipping routes.

The government is actively positioning Gwadar and Port Qasim as regional transshipment hubs by improving port efficiency, reducing operational costs, and providing incentives to attract global shipping operators. To boost business at Port Qasim, authorities have introduced major tariff incentives, including:

  • Elimination of wharfage charges on transshipment cargo
  • Reduced wet charges, such as pilotage and port dues
  • 50% fee discounts for vessels with 50% or more transshipment cargo
  • 25% fee concessions for vessels carrying 25–50% transshipment cargo

Minister Chaudhry noted that Gwadar Port’s modern infrastructure and strategic location along Pakistan’s southwestern coastline make it increasingly attractive for global shipping lines. To further facilitate transshipment, authorities are also offering free cargo storage, encouraging higher cargo volumes and enhancing regional competitiveness.

Gwadar Port, along with its integrated free zone, currently has the capacity to handle up to 16,000 TEUs of containerized cargo and 90,000 square meters for general cargo storage. The successful berthing of the HMO LEADER demonstrates Gwadar’s operational growth, supported by financial incentives, growing capacity, and a stable maritime environment.

“This milestone highlights Gwadar Port’s critical role in Pakistan’s blue economy, strengthening maritime trade and improving connectivity with regional and international markets,” the minister added.

With rising interest from international shipping operators and continued regional tensions reshaping global maritime routes, Gwadar Port is steadily advancing towards becoming a key regional transshipment hub, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s maritime trade strategy.
