IMO’s SENSREC Project Launches Three-Part Video Series Highlighting Women’s Role in Ship Recycling

The SENSREC project of the International Maritime Organization has released a series of three parts of the video that demonstrate the various and significant roles played by women in the ship recycling sector. The campaign brings into focus how the industry can be more accommodating, fairer, and more productive through acknowledging and harnessing women’s transferable skills in the maritime workforce.

The series will involve new audiences in the debate of maritime sustainability, workforce diversity, and safe working environments by providing them with real-life contributions of women who work in the field of ship recycling. The project underscores that increased inclusion is not only a matter of equity but also a key factor in improving workplace safety, efficiency, and innovation, particularly in traditionally male-dominated industries.

The video series is structured into three segments, each focusing on a core element of a modern maritime workplace. The first segment explores the meaningful contributions of women in ship recycling and the broader maritime sector. The second segment addresses safety and respect at work, emphasizing the prevention of harassment and discrimination and highlighting the importance of awareness in ensuring a safe and respectful workforce. The final segment demonstrates the value of gender diversity, showing how inclusive workplaces benefit from fresh perspectives, stronger teamwork, and enhanced innovation.

The series is intended to serve as a conversation starter for the global maritime industry, encouraging stakeholders to take concrete steps toward creating sustainable and inclusive ship recycling workplaces.

The SENSREC project is a capacity-building initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aimed at supporting developing countries in implementing the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. The project provides integrated assistance focused on policy alignment, the establishment of institutional mechanisms, and the development of effective governance systems. It also strengthens stakeholder capacity in the ship recycling sector by promoting sustainable technical, social, and environmental practices.
