Lloyd’s Register Hosts 2026 Hellenic Advisory Committee in Athens to Address Greek Shipping Challenges

Lloyd’s Register (LR) convened its 2026 Hellenic Advisory Committee in Athens on 19 February, bringing together more than 30 leading Greek shipowners and senior executives to discuss the strategic priorities shaping the global maritime industry.

The high-level meeting was co-hosted by Nick Brown, Chief Executive Officer of Lloyd’s Register, and Elina Papageorgiou, Senior Vice President Greece & Cyprus. The session reinforced the Committee’s role as a senior advisory platform linking one of the world’s most influential shipping communities with LR’s global leadership team.

A key milestone during the meeting was the formal introduction of Ioanna Procopiou, Chief Executive Officer of Sea Traders S.A. and Prominence Maritime S.A., as the new Chairwoman of the Lloyd’s Register Hellenic Advisory Committee. Her appointment marks a new phase in the Committee’s development, strengthening its mandate to provide experience-driven guidance supporting LR’s global advisory, technical and regulatory engagement.

Focus on Newbuilding, Fleet Investment and Yard Readiness

Discussions throughout the day centered on newbuilding activity in Asia, examining the preparedness of shipyards and vessel owners to meet emerging regulatory and technical requirements. Members evaluated the broader strategic implications for fleet investment amid shifting market and compliance landscapes.

Participants also addressed the evolving skillsets required to operate increasingly complex maritime systems safely, highlighting workforce readiness as a critical factor in industry transformation.

Decarbonisation and Net-Zero Preparedness

The agenda included an in-depth assessment of the maritime sector’s net-zero ambitions and the industry’s readiness to deliver decarbonisation at scale. Committee members engaged in candid dialogue on regulatory developments, technological pathways and the operational challenges associated with energy transition.

Elina Papageorgiou emphasized that the Hellenic Advisory Committee strengthens LR’s position as a trusted partner to the Greek shipping community and as a collaborative thought leader. She noted that the insights shared during the session are instrumental in shaping LR’s priorities and enhancing its ability to support clients through decarbonisation, regulatory change and long-term fleet planning in a complex operating environment.

Ioanna Procopiou highlighted the Committee’s longstanding role in fostering constructive engagement between LR and the Greek maritime sector. She underscored the importance of continued dialogue as the industry navigates a period of significant transformation, expressing her commitment to supporting the Committee in its next chapter.

With Greece remaining a dominant force in global shipping, the 2026 Hellenic Advisory Committee meeting underscored the importance of strategic collaboration between classification societies and shipowners as the maritime industry adapts to regulatory evolution, sustainability targets and long-term fleet modernization.
