Over 70 Migrants Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Lampedusa Coast
A migrant boat attempting to reach Europe from Libya capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa on Easter Sunday, leaving over 70 people missing and dozens rescued in a dramatic maritime incident.
According to reports, 32 survivors were pulled from the Mediterranean waters by passing commercial ships conducting emergency rescue operations. Tragically, two of the rescued later succumbed to their injuries. Survivors were subsequently transferred to Italian Coast Guard vessels and transported to Lampedusa for urgent medical care.

Eyewitness accounts indicate the vessel was carrying a total of 105 migrants, leaving at least 71 people unaccounted for. Harrowing footage released by Sea-Watch shows survivors clinging to the overturned boat as a commercial vessel approached to assist.
Maritime authorities have yet to provide official statements, and the Italian Ministry of Interior has not released further comments. The Coast Guard has also not immediately responded to requests for information.
This incident underscores the ongoing dangers of migration across the central Mediterranean, particularly amid rough weather conditions this year that have severely impacted sea travel from North Africa. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that at least 683 people have died attempting the crossing in 2026, marking the highest death toll in the region since 2014.
