Panama Canal Authority and Monjasa Launch Strategic Partnership to Promote Sustainability and Community Development

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and global marine fuels supplier Monjasa have joined forces in a new five-year cooperation agreement aimed at fostering sustainability and supporting communities in and around the Panama Canal Watershed (CHCP).

Signed by Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, and Rasmus Jacobsen, Managing Director of Monjasa Americas, the agreement outlines joint initiatives in environmental protection, community development, education, cultural programs, and overall well-being, all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Projects will primarily target communities within the CHCP, while also extending benefits to other regions of Panama.

The partnership emphasizes the integration of the three pillars of sustainability;environmental, social, and governance, into practical programs. Initiatives will focus on decarbonization, emissions reduction, adoption of ESG practices, and volunteer-driven community engagement, aligning with International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets for greener shipping and responsible operations.

During the signing ceremony, officials from both the Panama Canal and Monjasa highlighted the importance of collaboration in promoting development models that minimize environmental impact, generate shared value, and contribute to a resilient local economy. Each initiative under the agreement will be implemented in accordance with the legal frameworks, capacities, and standards of both parties.

“This agreement reaffirms our commitment to collaborating with strategic partners to advance sustainable actions that endure over time and build a more responsible future,” said the Panama Canal representative.

Rasmus Jacobsen of Monjasa added, “As a global supplier fueling maritime trade, we are proud to strengthen our relationship with the Panama Canal Authority. It is vital that our presence also delivers tangible benefits to the communities and environment surrounding this critical waterway.”

This partnership marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainability in global maritime operations while supporting the local communities that are integral to the Panama Canal’s continued success.
