Seatrium Delivers Next-Generation Wind Turbine Installation Vessel to Maersk Offshore Wind
Seatrium has successfully delivered its next-generation wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) to Maersk Offshore Wind, marking a major milestone for both companies in the offshore wind sector. The delivery, completed on February 26 at Seatrium’s Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore following sea trials and final readiness checks, represents a significant step toward building a future-ready offshore wind fleet.
The WTIV, custom-engineered to install some of the world’s largest offshore wind turbines, had previously been at the center of a dispute between the two companies. Despite Maersk Offshore Wind’s initial contract cancellation last year, the matter was resolved with a total contract price of $360 million, including a $110 million cash payment on delivery. Seatrium has secured a mortgage on the vessel against its future earnings.
Designed with a unique feeder-based system, the vessel allows smaller feeder boats to transport components while the main jack-up vessel remains stationed at the installation site. Maersk Offshore Wind partnered with Edison Chouest to supply the feeders and tugs, with U.S.-built feeder components enabling compliance with the Jones Act while targeting the U.S. offshore wind market.
The feeder system ensures “absolute stability for a fixed-to-fixed transfer,” enabling operations in higher sea states and reducing installation time and costs. The WTIV features a 1,900-tonne main crane with a 180-meter hook height, capable of handling turbines of 15 MW or larger. Its design allows it to access smaller, shallower marshalling points, including ports behind bridges, locks, or hurricane gates.
Originally contracted in 2022 for Equinor’s Empire Wind project off New York’s Long Island, the vessel will depart Singapore in March to begin installations. Maersk Offshore Wind, while initially focused on the U.S. market, is now exploring international opportunities for the vessel following the successful delivery and completion of U.S. assignments.
Seatrium celebrates the WTIV as a demonstration of its engineering expertise and a strategic entry into the offshore wind segment, positioning the company to leverage its decades-long heritage in offshore vessel construction to support the growing global renewable energy sector.
