Fire-Damaged ONE Henry Hudson Departs Los Angeles, Heads to Asia for Repairs

The 8,212 TEU container vessel ONE Henry Hudson has begun a cautious Pacific crossing toward Asia for repairs, nearly two months after a serious onboard fire while the ship was berthed at Yusen Container Terminal in the Port of Los Angeles.

Ocean Network Express (ONE) informed customers that cargo discharge operations were completed on Monday. All containers have been transferred to designated storage areas at Yusen Terminal. Shippers are required to settle general average contributions before their cargo can be released.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the blaze started below deck, likely due to an electrical source, before spreading across multiple sublevels. A mid-deck explosion interrupted the vessel’s power supply, shutting down lighting systems and crane operations onboard.

Due to the intensity of the fire, authorities made the decision to tow the ship away from the port to an anchorage near Angel’s Gate Lighthouse. This allowed firefighting and cooling operations to continue while minimizing risks to port infrastructure and surrounding facilities.

The vessel is now proceeding to an unspecified repair yard in Asia as recovery efforts continue following the incident.
