Engine Room Fire on Singapore-Registered Bulk Carrier MANDY Leaves Two Crew Members Dead
Two crew members have died following an engine room fire aboard the Singapore-registered bulk carrier MANDY off the coast of China, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
The fire broke out at approximately 7:35pm Singapore time on Tuesday. The vessel’s crew successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing further escalation of the onboard emergency.
At the time of the incident, there were 25 Myanmar nationals serving as crew members on board. No Singaporeans were among the personnel on the vessel. Two crew members were confirmed dead, while a third seafarer was evacuated to a shore-based medical facility for further treatment.
The MPA stated that there have been no reports of marine pollution resulting from the incident. Authorities will conduct a formal investigation to determine the cause of the engine room fire and assess safety compliance measures.
The shipping company is arranging for the vessel to be towed to Yantai Port in China for further inspection and necessary procedures. Meanwhile, the MPA has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that it is working closely with the company and relevant Chinese authorities to provide assistance.
The incident underscores ongoing safety risks within the global shipping industry, particularly engine room-related fires, which remain among the most critical onboard hazards for bulk carriers and merchant vessels operating on international routes.
