Colombia, Senegal and South Africa Join IMO GreenVoyage2050 Programme to Reduce Shipping Emissions
Colombia, Senegal and South Africa have been selected as 2026 partner countries of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) GreenVoyage2050 Programme, a technical cooperation initiative supporting the implementation of the 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy. Under the programme, GreenVoyage2050 will assist the three countries in developing National Action Plans, which will serve as strategic roadmaps outlining national measures to reduce GHG emissions from shipping. The support provided through the GreenVoyage2050 Programme and IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP) will be tailored to each country’s priorities, including expert technical guidance, stakeholder engagement, and administrative coordination.
National Action Plans play a key role in aligning maritime sectors with IMO’s 2023 GHG Strategy (resolution MEPC.377(80)), which aims to achieve net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by around 2050. These plans help countries enhance readiness for emission reduction, address both domestic and international shipping, and provide a coordinated framework for implementing effective strategies. Ms. Gyorgyi Gurban, Head of Projects Implementation at IMO, said, “We are delighted to welcome Colombia, Senegal and South Africa as new partners in the GreenVoyage2050 Programme. We will work together this year to identify practical, country-driven pathways to reduce GHG emissions from shipping.”
With this selection, the three countries join a growing cohort of partner nations advancing National Action Plans under GreenVoyage2050, building on momentum from 2025 and fostering cross-regional collaboration and peer learning. Existing National Action Plans submitted to IMO are available on the IMO website, providing examples of how countries are translating the IMO GHG Strategy into national-level action. Further opportunities for support will be available through the next open call for technical assistance in 2026, with eligible Member States encouraged to apply.
GreenVoyage2050, now in its second phase (2024–2030), is funded by donor governments including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. The programme assists developing countries in designing and implementing national GHG-reduction strategies and piloting low-carbon shipping technologies.
