Barbados Advances Green Shipping Initiatives with IMO-Backed Study
Barbados is taking significant steps to reduce shipping emissions by exploring green shipping corridors. The first phase involves a pre-feasibility study commissioned by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to identify opportunities for sustainable maritime transport. An initial online meeting on February 12 brought together the Government of Barbados and key national stakeholders, including the Maritime Transport Administration, the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, and Barbados Port Inc., to discuss the framework of the Barbados Green Shipping Corridors: Pre-Feasibility, Policy and Regulatory Pathways study.
Funded through the IMO Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP), the study builds on previous efforts under the GreenVoyage2050 Programme, which supports countries in developing National Action Plans (NAPs) for maritime decarbonization. The study is expected to deliver actionable insights, including opportunities for Barbados to engage in green shipping corridor partnerships, identification of the two most promising routes for zero-emission shipping operations, and a roadmap with policy and regulatory pathways to facilitate implementation.
The initiative aims to evaluate Barbados’ readiness and potential to participate in scalable zero-emission shipping projects while addressing national and regional policy, regulatory, and infrastructure considerations. IMO will continue collaborating with the Government of Barbados and relevant stakeholders throughout the study, which is supported by the Ricardo consultancy group.
