US-Iran Deal near Completion as Initial Agreement Could Be Signed Within Days, US Official Says

A senior U.S. official said on Friday that the United States and Iran are very close to reaching an agreement to resolve their ongoing dispute, with an initial deal potentially being signed in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, the official said negotiations have made significant progress, although the parties have not yet crossed the finish line.

“The negotiating team has got us in a very good spot, but let’s see here, we’re not quite at the finish line yet, but we are very close,” the official said.

According to the official, the terms agreed upon meet the core objectives of U.S. President Donald Trump and place the negotiations in a favorable position for a final outcome.

The proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, and the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.

The official stated that the MOU would result in the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program. Under the proposed terms, Iran’s highly enriched uranium would be destroyed on-site before being removed from the country. The agreement would also establish an inspection regime designed to ensure long-term compliance and enforcement.

If Iran complies with the terms of the agreement, it would receive relief from economic pressures, including sanctions relief and the unfreezing of Iranian assets, the official added.

“The Iranians don’t get anything upon the signing of the MOU or upon the negotiation itself,” the official said.

The official explained that economic incentives would be tied directly to Iran’s compliance with its obligations under the agreement.

“They get rewarded economically for complying with their obligations under the deal. So if they turn over the nuclear material as promised, they’ll get something. If they dismantle their nuclear program or their nuclear facilities, they’ll get something else,” the official said.
