British Forces Seize Russian Shadow Fleet Oil Tanker in Landmark English Channel Operation

British armed forces have for the first time independently intercepted and taken control of a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker sailing through the English Channel, marking a significant escalation in sanctions enforcement at sea, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The operation targeted the tanker Smyrtos, which is believed to be part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet, vessels used to transport fuel and circumvent international sanctions imposed after the Ukraine conflict.

Six-Hour Royal Marines Boarding Operation

In a coordinated military action, Royal Marine Commandos and specially trained law enforcement officers boarded the vessel early Sunday. The six-hour operation was supported by British naval ships and aircraft.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the tanker will be held and closely monitored off the southern coast of England following its interception.

UK Calls It a Direct Blow to Sanctions Evasion Networks

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the operation as a direct blow against networks supporting Russia’s war effort, stating that those enabling sanctions evasion “cannot hide.”

The UK government describes the Russian shadow fleet as a network of more than 700 aging and often poorly documented vessels used to transport oil globally. According to official estimates, these ships carry around 75% of sanctioned Russian oil exports and provide a critical revenue stream for the Kremlin.

Britain has already imposed sanctions on more than 500 vessels linked to the shadow fleet, with over 70% of them reportedly older than 15 years.

First Independent UK Action against Shadow Fleet Vessel

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that this is the first time British forces have acted alone to intercept and detain a shadow fleet vessel in the English Channel.

Earlier operations included joint cooperation with the United States, including the seizure of the oil tanker Marinera in waters between Iceland and Scotland, involving alleged sanctions violations linked to oil transport for multiple sanctioned states.

Expanded Legal Authority for Maritime Boardings

Following earlier operations, the UK government expanded legal authorisation for armed forces and maritime law enforcement to board sanctioned vessels in accordance with international law. This policy shift was approved earlier this year under Prime Minister Starmer.

The Smyrtos operation was also conducted in close coordination with France, reflecting growing cross-border maritime enforcement cooperation.

Rising European Action against Shadow Fleet

Earlier this month, French authorities intercepted the tanker Tagor, suspected of being part of the Russian shadow fleet, in the Atlantic Ocean with UK support. The vessel was detained approximately 400 nautical miles west of Brittany. France has now carried out multiple boardings of suspected shadow fleet vessels since September 2025.

Political Context and Security Concerns

The interception comes amid political tensions in the UK, including recent resignations of Defence Secretary John Healey and Armed Forces Minister Al Carns over defence spending disagreements.

A new defence investment strategy is expected ahead of an upcoming NATO summit, while concerns persist over increasing Russian naval and aerial activity near UK waters. Officials believe such movements may be aimed at testing maritime defence readiness and mapping critical underwater infrastructure.

Russia Rejects Shadow Fleet Claims

Russian officials, including presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, have criticised Western actions, alleging that the concept of a “shadow fleet” is being used as justification for unlawful maritime interventions.

The Russian government maintains that European countries are misusing maritime enforcement measures under international law to target commercial shipping routes.
