Fishermen Set Malta National Record with Massive 50.8kg Wreckfish Catch in Deep Sea Fishing Achievement
A group of Maltese anglers has set a new national record after successfully landing the largest documented wreckfish ever caught on a fishing rod in Maltese waters, marking a significant milestone in deep sea recreational fishing.
The record-breaking catch has been officially verified by The Malta Records, which confirmed the impressive wreckfish weighed 50.8kg.
Locally known as Ħanżir tal-Fond, the wreckfish is a deep-water species found in the Mediterranean Sea and is highly valued among sport fishing enthusiasts for its size and strength. The record catch was achieved by Team Enigma X, consisting of Josef Cassar, Clifford Zammit, and Etienne Camilleri. The team landed the fish aboard a Tuccoli 250VM fishing vessel on 30 May.
The Malta Records formally announced and presented the achievement during a visit to Go Fish Ħamrun, where the local fishing community gathered to celebrate and learn more about the record-setting deep sea catch.
This milestone underscores the skill, patience, and endurance required in sport fishing and highlights a proud moment for Malta’s recreational and deep-sea fishing sector, reinforcing its growing reputation in Mediterranean angling records.
