Pakistan Launches Major Search and Rescue Operation After Cargo Aircraft Goes Missing Off Karachi Coast
Pakistan has launched a large-scale maritime search and rescue (SAR) operation after a cargo aircraft disappeared over the Arabian Sea while approaching Karachi, prompting an urgent response from naval, air force, and civilian authorities.
According to official statements, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control on Wednesday night after reporting a navigational system malfunction during its flight toward Karachi. Air traffic controllers attempted to guide the crew, but communication was lost just minutes later. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was approximately 155 nautical miles (287 kilometers) west of Karachi over the Arabian Sea.

The aircraft was carrying five crew members, including two pilots, two engineers, and one support staff member. Authorities have not yet confirmed the status of those on board as search efforts continue.
Flight tracking data indicates the aircraft experienced significant altitude fluctuations before rapidly descending. The final recorded position placed the aircraft at a very low altitude above sea level, leading authorities to believe it may have crashed into the Arabian Sea southwest of Karachi.
In response, Pakistan has activated a coordinated maritime search and rescue mission, bringing together multiple government agencies to locate the missing aircraft and its crew. The operation highlights the country’s emergency response capabilities in one of the busiest maritime zones of the northern Arabian Sea.
The Pakistan Navy has diverted the guided missile frigate PNS ZULFIQAR to the suspected search area. The Pakistan Air Force has deployed a Saab surveillance aircraft from Bolhari, while the Pakistan Navy has launched an ATR-72 maritime patrol aircraft from Turbat to support aerial search operations.
Adding to the extensive rescue effort, the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) has dispatched its merchant vessel Lahore to participate in the ongoing search mission, expanding coverage across the designated maritime search area.
Authorities say all participating agencies are working in close coordination to locate the aircraft and continue search operations until further information becomes available. Officials have urged the public to rely only on verified updates as investigations into the incident continue.
