ICS Urges Protection of Seafarers as Strait of Hormuz Crisis Continues to Threaten Global Shipping
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has renewed its call for the protection of seafarers, merchant vessels, and freedom of navigation as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to create uncertainty for global maritime trade and energy supply chains.
In a statement on the latest developments, Thomas A. Kazakos, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, emphasized that the shipping industry’s foremost concern remains the safety and wellbeing of the thousands of seafarers and civilians affected by the ongoing security situation in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
“The safety of seafarers must remain the highest priority,” Kazakos said, noting that merchant mariners are performing essential duties under increasingly volatile conditions. He stressed that commercial shipping should never become a casualty of geopolitical conflict and urged all parties to take every possible measure to safeguard crews navigating the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical gateway for global oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and container shipping, remains one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints. Any disruption in the waterway has immediate implications for international shipping, marine insurance, freight rates, global energy markets, and supply chain stability.
The ICS warned that continued instability not only places seafarers at risk but also threatens the uninterrupted movement of global commerce. The organization reiterated that maintaining freedom of navigation and ensuring the safe transit of commercial vessels are essential for international trade and maritime security.
Kazakos also extended condolences to the families of those affected by recent incidents, emphasizing that the human cost of the crisis must not be overlooked. He called on governments and relevant authorities to work together to de-escalate tensions and provide the necessary protections for civilian shipping operating in the Gulf region.
