Pakistan’s Top 10 Profitable SOEs Include KPT, PQA and PNSC

Three of Pakistan’s key maritime institutions, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim Authority (PQA) and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), have ranked among the country’s 10 most profitable state-owned enterprises (SOEs) for fiscal year 2024–25, highlighting the financial performance of the country’s port and shipping sector.

According to the Federal State-Owned Enterprises Annual Aggregate Report for FY2024–25, issued by the Central Monitoring Unit of the Finance Division, KPT ranked sixth, PQA seventh and PNSC tenth among Pakistan’s most profitable SOEs. Their performance underscores the economic importance of port infrastructure, maritime trade and shipping services, which support international commerce, cargo movement and national economic activity.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry attributed the rankings to the performance of the three organisations’ management and workforce, alongside the Ministry of Maritime Affairs’ oversight.

The minister said the results demonstrated the potential of Pakistan’s maritime institutions to contribute further to the national economy through stronger financial management, operational efficiency and effective resource utilisation.

He emphasised that sustaining this performance would require stronger corporate governance, institutional accountability and continued operational improvements.

KPT and PQA manage major port operations in Pakistan, while PNSC provides national shipping services. Their activities support cargo handling, international trade and maritime connectivity, making their operational and financial performance significant to the country’s wider trade infrastructure.

Maritime Sector’s Role in Economic Growth

The three institutions’ inclusion among Pakistan’s most profitable SOEs highlights the importance of commercially effective port operations and shipping services. For a country reliant on maritime routes for international trade, the financial strength of its port authorities and national shipping operator remains an important consideration in improving trade efficiency and strengthening maritime competitiveness.

Sustaining these results will depend on transparent governance, prudent financial management and improvements in operational performance. Greater institutional efficiency can help Pakistan strengthen its maritime infrastructure and reinforce the contribution of ports and shipping to long-term economic development.

The minister said continued improvements in the management and performance of maritime organisations would help strengthen Pakistan’s maritime sector.
