Engine Room Fire on Tanker Near Oman Leaves One Dead, Two Crew Members Missing

A tanker operating off the coast of Oman suffered an engine room fire, leaving one person dead and two crew members missing, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, a key Omani port and shipping hub. UKMTO reported on Wednesday that local authorities responded after receiving information about a fire onboard the vessel.

According to the maritime authority, emergency teams were deployed to assist with the evacuation of the crew while the tanker remained under the supervision of local authorities.

“Local authorities have reported a tanker has experienced a fire in their engine room and are on the scene assisting with the evacuation of the crew. The vessel is reporting one casualty and two crew members missing,” UKMTO stated in an update shared on social media platform X.

The agency did not provide details regarding the identity or condition of the casualty. Authorities also confirmed that no environmental pollution or marine contamination has been reported as a result of the incident.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the engine room fire and the circumstances surrounding the missing crew members.

No additional information about the tanker, its cargo, or the nationality of the crew was immediately available.
