Green Ship Recycling Revolution: Cyclus Marine and Lloyd’s Register Partner to Boost Safe, Transparent End-of-Life Vessel Management

In a major development for the global maritime sector, Cyclus Marine, part of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to accelerate the adoption of responsible and sustainable ship recycling practices across the world.

The agreement, announced shortly after the official launch of Cyclus Marine, represents a significant step toward building a more structured, transparent, and environmentally responsible ship recycling ecosystem. With global demand for end-of-life vessel processing expected to rise sharply in the coming years, the partnership comes at a critical time for the shipping industry.

As the maritime sector faces increasing pressure from environmental regulations, aging fleets, and tightening sustainability expectations, ship recycling has become a key component of the vessel lifecycle. However, the industry still struggles with inconsistencies in safety standards, environmental compliance, and worker protection, challenges this collaboration aims to address.

Key Focus Areas of the Cyclus Marine–LR Collaboration

Under the newly signed MoU, both organisations will work together on four strategic pillars designed to improve global ship recycling standards:

  • Development of a structured system to evaluate ship recycling facilities based on recognised international benchmarks.
  • Strengthening transparency by helping shipowners identify and select compliant recycling yards.
  • Enhancing skills, operational safety, and technical competence within recycling facilities.
  • Driving awareness and encouraging adoption of higher environmental and safety standards across the maritime value chain.

Strengthening Lifecycle Responsibility in Shipping

Cyclus Marine brings extensive expertise in ship lifecycle management, including newbuilding supervision, dry-docking, retrofitting, conversion, and decommissioning. This partnership with Lloyd’s Register extends that capability into the final stage of a vessel’s life, ensuring safer and more responsible recycling outcomes.

According to Cyclus Marine General Manager Gabriel Yeo, the collaboration merges technical execution with assurance expertise to improve transparency and safety across the industry. He emphasized that the initiative aims to turn sustainability commitments into real-world operational impact.

Lloyd’s Register CEO Nick Brown highlighted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to raising global standards in ship recycling and providing shipowners with technically reliable and credible solutions.

Driving ESG Transformation in Maritime Recycling

Industry experts view this MoU as part of a broader shift toward ESG-driven maritime operations, where sustainable ship recycling, green shipping practices, and regulatory compliance are becoming central to fleet management decisions.
