IMO Resolution on Iran Shipping Attacks Sparks Global Maritime Safety Concerns

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has taken a decisive step toward protecting global shipping lanes, as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) welcomed a newly adopted resolution calling on Iran to immediately halt attacks and threats against commercial vessels and critical maritime infrastructure.

The resolution, passed during the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, highlights growing international alarm over risks posed to merchant shipping, port facilities, and coastal infrastructure, key pillars of global maritime trade.

UAE Raises Alarm over Marine Pollution and Trade Disruption

Officials in Abu Dhabi stressed that continued attacks could trigger catastrophic environmental consequences. The resolution specifically warns of potential large-scale marine pollution from oil spills, chemicals, sea mines, and other hazardous materials, threats that could severely impact one of the world’s most ecologically sensitive marine zones.

The Arabian Gulf, Sea of Oman, and Arabian Sea were identified as high-risk areas, where even a single major incident could have long-lasting ecological and economic consequences.

Regional Stability Linked to Environmental Security

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized that environmental damage in the Gulf is never isolated. She warned that attacks on shipping and infrastructure could escalate into broader crises, threatening marine biodiversity, disrupting fisheries, and destabilizing livelihoods dependent on maritime industries.

Echoing this concern, Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri highlighted the region’s dependence on safe navigation routes, noting that millions rely on uninterrupted shipping and fishing activities for survival.

Global Cooperation Urged to Prevent Maritime Crisis

The IMO resolution calls on member states and international organizations to strengthen coordination on pollution response and preparedness. It also encourages a review of contingency plans to tackle major environmental emergencies across vital shipping corridors.

The IMO Secretary-General has been tasked with monitoring the environmental fallout of ongoing tensions, reinforcing the urgency of collective action.

UAE Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Marine Ecosystems

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Special Envoy for Nature, reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to working with global partners to prevent escalation and safeguard marine ecosystems. She underlined a critical message gaining traction in maritime policy circles: environmental security is inseparable from global stability.

Why This Matters for Global Shipping and Energy Markets

The Arabian Gulf remains one of the world’s most strategic shipping corridors, handling a significant share of global energy supplies. Any disruption, whether through direct attacks or environmental disasters, could ripple across international markets, affecting oil prices, shipping insurance costs, and supply chain stability.

With tensions rising, the IMO’s move signals a broader shift toward prioritizing maritime safety, environmental protection, and the resilience of global trade routes.
