Port Infrastructure Upgrades Underway at Karachi Port to Boost Capacity and Efficiency
Port infrastructure upgrades at Karachi Port are now in the execution phase, marking a major step toward improving Pakistan maritime trade, cargo capacity enhancement, and overall shipping industry Pakistan efficiency. According to Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL) and Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML) Chief Executive Officer Khurram Aziz Khan, these port infrastructure upgrades at Karachi Port include major dredging and modernization works designed to reduce logistics cost reduction pressures and strengthen national trade competitiveness.
He stated that Karachi Port dredging 15.5 metres and cargo capacity enhancement works have already progressed significantly, with dredging completed from berths 6 to 17, achieving a uniform depth of 15.5 metres. This deep water port development supports bulk cargo vessels Pakistan operations and improves container terminal efficiency, allowing the port to accommodate larger ships and streamline Pakistan maritime trade and logistics flows.
He further added that the turning basin expansion is currently underway under the same port infrastructure upgrades framework, enabling handling of bulk cargo vessels up to 120,000 tons. This upgrade increases cargo capacity enhancement potential and improves shipping industry Pakistan performance by reducing logistics cost reduction and improving turnaround time at Karachi Port.
During the visit, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, accompanied by Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, was briefed on the ongoing developments and strategic importance of Karachi Port dredging 15.5 metres and associated deep water port improvements.
