Port Qasim Handles Record LNG Carrier in Challenging Monsoon Operation, Strengthening Pakistan’s Energy Security
KARACHI, July 11, 2026 — In a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s maritime sector, the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has successfully berthed the LNG carrier S K Resolute under severe monsoon weather, ensuring uninterrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies and reinforcing the country’s energy security during peak summer demand.
The complex maritime operation was carried out under emergency conditions after escalating regional tensions forced two scheduled QatarEnergy LNG vessels to turn back under a declaration of Force Majeure. With the risk of an energy shortfall increasing, Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) swiftly secured an emergency spot LNG cargo that was already in transit, requiring immediate handling upon arrival at Port Qasim.
Despite gale-force winds, rough seas, and difficult navigation conditions, the Port Qasim Authority’s marine operations team successfully guided and berthed the vessel through the port’s challenging 49-kilometer navigation channel, regarded as one of the longest and most demanding LNG transit channels in the world. Marine pilots, tug operators, and pilot boat crews worked in precise coordination to complete the high-risk maneuver safely and efficiently, demonstrating exceptional maritime expertise and operational readiness.
The operation also established two significant milestones for Pakistan’s LNG shipping industry. S K Resolute delivered 171,951 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, making it the largest single LNG cargo ever handled at the PGPCL terminal. In addition, with a beam of 47.8 meters, the vessel became the widest LNG carrier ever accommodated at either of Port Qasim’s LNG terminals during the monsoon season.
The successful berthing of the emergency LNG shipment ensures that vital fuel supplies enter Pakistan’s national transmission system without delay, helping maintain electricity generation, support industrial operations, and provide stable power supplies for millions of consumers across the country.
The achievement highlights the Port Qasim Authority’s capability to conduct complex port and shipping operations under extreme weather conditions while safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime logistics network and national energy infrastructure.
