Suspected Naval Mine Detected in Strait of Hormuz, Oman Issues Maritime Navigation Warning
Oman’s Maritime Security Center on Saturday announced the detection of a suspected naval mine west of the inshore traffic zone in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, within Omani territorial waters.
In a statement posted on X, the center urged all seafarers, fishermen, and vessels operating in the area to exercise maximum caution while navigating through the waterway. Authorities advised mariners to avoid approaching any suspicious objects and to report such sightings immediately to the relevant authorities.
The warning comes amid ongoing concerns over maritime security, shipping safety, and vessel navigation risks in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit corridors for global oil and LNG shipments.
Regional tensions have remained elevated since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf, while also closing the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation and was subsequently extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.
