India’s Continued Crude Buying Helps Balance Global Energy Markets: Russia
Russia has said it sees no indication that India is planning to scale back or halt its purchases of Russian oil, reaffirming that energy cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi remains strong and mutually beneficial. The Russian foreign ministry said on Wednesday that India’s continued imports of Russian hydrocarbons contribute to stability in the global energy market and remain an important pillar of bilateral relations.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, the ministry said Russia is confident that India’s oil purchases serve the interests of both countries and added that Moscow is ready to further deepen cooperation with Indian partners in the energy sector. Russian officials also stressed that they have received no formal communication from India suggesting any reconsideration of its current oil import strategy.
The remarks follow comments made by Russia a day earlier stating that there had been no official notice from New Delhi indicating a suspension of Russian oil purchases. This response comes amid renewed international attention after US President Donald Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop buying Russian oil and instead increase energy imports from the United States and potentially Venezuela.
Trump made the claim in a post on Truth Social following a phone conversation with Prime Minister Modi earlier this week. He said the discussions were linked to a broader trade agreement between India and the United States, under which Washington would lower its proposed reciprocal tariff on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent.
Despite the comments from Washington, Russia has emphasized that its energy relationship with India remains intact, underlining the strategic and economic importance of ongoing oil trade between the two countries at a time of heightened volatility in global energy markets.
