Jazan Shrimp Fishing Season Begins, Boosting Aquaculture, Fisheries and Food Security
The shrimp fishing season has officially opened in Saudi Arabia’s Jazan Region, marking the return of one of the Red Sea’s most important marine seasons. Running from September 1 through the end of March 2027, the seven-month season is expected to support fishing, marine production, shrimp supply and the sustainable development of the Kingdom’s fisheries sector.
The annual season also highlights the growing importance of aquaculture, sustainable fisheries and marine resources in strengthening food security. More than 120 fishing boats are expected to participate after the Jazan branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture completed the necessary preparations, including services and regulatory procedures to help fishermen operate in line with approved requirements.
Jazan Fisheries Record Significant Marine Production
The scale of Jazan’s fisheries sector is reflected in its recent marine production figures. The region recorded a total catch of 10,639 tons of various fish species, while shrimp catches reached 953 tons.
At the same time, shrimp production from aquaculture projects reached 2,234 tons, demonstrating the important contribution of both capture fisheries and aquaculture to the region’s marine food supply.
From an industry perspective, the combination of wild-caught fisheries and aquaculture provides a broader foundation for seafood production. It also highlights the importance of responsible resource management as demand for marine products continues to grow.
Authorities Complete Preparations for Shrimp Season
Ahmed Al Majthal, Director-General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture’s Jazan branch, told the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that the branch had completed all preparations and services required for the start of the shrimp fishing season.
He said the branch is supporting fishermen by completing the procedures required for them to begin their activities at the start of the season. Authorities are also coordinating with relevant government agencies to issue seasonal shrimp fishing licenses through the Naama portal.
The regulatory measures are designed to ensure that fishing activities are conducted according to approved rules and requirements while supporting the continued development of Jazan’s fisheries sector.
Shrimp Fishing Supports Sustainable Fisheries Development
The return of the Jazan shrimp season demonstrates the connection between fisheries regulation, marine production and aquaculture. Together, these activities contribute to the development of Saudi Arabia’s fisheries industry while supporting efforts to protect the Red Sea’s marine resources.
