Suez Canal Egypt and US Discuss Maritime Cooperation, Shipyards and Digital Transformation
Suez Canal Egypt is set to explore expanded cooperation with the United States in the maritime sector, with discussions focusing on shipyards, maritime services and digital transformation. Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie and US Chargé d’Affaires in Cairo Robert Silverman discussed Wednesday ways to strengthen Egypt-US cooperation in maritime activities.
A senior US diplomatic delegation attended the meeting at the SCA headquarters in Ismailia. The talks covered areas of cooperation including maritime services, shipyard development and digital transformation, as both sides highlighted the importance of the Suez Canal to global trade and maritime transportation.
The delegation included US Naval Attaché Captain William Goutin and US Embassy Economic Officer Andrew Duller.
During the meeting, Rabie said the waterway continues to hold a unique position in the global maritime community. He stressed that the authority remains committed to providing navigation and maritime services around the clock despite regional geopolitical challenges.
Rabie underscored the strategic importance of the Suez Canal as a key link supporting the stability of global supply chains and facilitating trade between East and West.
He said the canal had successfully dealt with the effects of geopolitical challenges in the region while maintaining navigation services without interruption.
The authority has also introduced a new package of maritime services designed to meet customers’ needs under both normal and emergency circumstances, Rabie added.
Suez Canal Expands Maritime Services Amid Industry Changes
Rabie said the various challenges and rapid changes affecting the maritime transport industry had demonstrated the canal’s distinctive position among the global shipping community. He cited its navigational advantages as well as the operational savings and reductions in time and distance it provides.
The SCA chairman also highlighted Egypt’s efforts to localize the maritime industry, pointing to an unprecedented expansion in the production of marine units at the Suez Canal.
The development of the sector is expected to improve the authority’s ability to provide a range of maritime services while opening new opportunities for exports, he said.
Rabie stressed that Egypt would continue upgrading the canal’s navigational channel through ongoing development projects.
He cited the latest expansion of the southern sector, which he said increased navigational safety in the area by 28 percent.
US Reaffirms Importance of Suez Canal to Global Trade
Meanwhile, Silverman reaffirmed the depth of Egyptian-US relations and praised cooperation with the Suez Canal Authority, stressing the canal’s importance to US interests and global trade between Europe and Asia.
The US diplomat also commended the authority’s diversified economic activities and its efforts to address the challenges facing maritime transport, expressing his interest in expanding cooperation with the SCA into new areas.
The two sides discussed potential cooperation in the development of shipyards and maritime services, as well as digital transformation.
At the end of the meeting, Rabie presented Silverman with the New Suez Canal shield and invited him to take a maritime tour of the New Suez Canal and visit the Suez Canal Museum.
