CLdN Starts Construction of First 1,100-TEU LoLo Container Vessel at HD Hyundai Ulsan Yard
CLdN has officially begun construction of the first of six 1,100-TEU load-on/load-off (LoLo) container vessels at HD Hyundai Mipo Shipyard, marking a strategic expansion in its container shipping operations alongside its core roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) services. The steel-cutting ceremony signals the start of the vessel build, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.
Each vessel is designed with a 1,100-TEU capacity and an open-top configuration to reduce port handling times, boosting efficiency for the company’s growing LoLo container segment. This newbuilding programme forms part of CLdN’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in European and global maritime logistics.

In a statement dated 25 September 2024, CLdN confirmed it had placed an order for 10 LoLo vessels at HD Hyundai Mipo in Ulsan, though current sources refer to six ships, reflecting a phased delivery plan. The vessels will support CLdN’s existing fleet of more than 30 roll-on/roll-off ships, enabling integrated quay-to-quay and door-to-door freight transport services across mainland Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Iberian Peninsula, and Scandinavia.
Earlier in January 2026, CLdN announced a weekly LoLo container service connecting Rotterdam Distriport and Leixoes near Porto, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding its container shipping network.
HD Hyundai Mipo, headquartered in Ulsan, South Korea, is part of the HD Hyundai industrial group and specializes in building small- and medium-sized commercial vessels, including container ships, product and chemical tankers, LPG carriers, and other specialized ship types. The collaboration underscores the growing demand for efficient LoLo shipping solutions in Europe and globally.
This new vessel programme is expected to enhance CLdN’s operational capacity, reduce port turnaround times, and strengthen the company’s logistics and maritime trade services, positioning it as a key player in the competitive European shipping market.
