5 Italian Divers Killed in Maldives Deep Cave Diving Tragedy as Massive Search Operation Continues

A deadly deep-sea diving accident in the Maldives has left five Italian scuba divers dead after a cave exploration mission went wrong in the waters of Vaavu Atoll, authorities confirmed Friday.

The group was reportedly attempting an advanced underwater cave dive at a depth of nearly 50 metres near the popular diving area of Alimathaa when the tragedy unfolded. According to officials, one diver was first discovered dead inside a deep underwater cave, with recovery teams retrieving the body from almost 60 metres below the surface.

The remaining four divers are believed to have become trapped inside the same underwater cave system, triggering an intensive maritime search and rescue operation involving rescue boats, aircraft, and specialist diving teams.

Authorities in the Maldives described the recovery mission as extremely dangerous due to strong underwater currents, poor visibility, and the complex structure of the submerged cave network. Rescue crews are continuing operations despite rough sea conditions and a yellow weather alert that has complicated access to the site.

An Italian diving expert has joined local police divers and coast guard personnel to support the ongoing operation. Officials are also assessing alternative entry points into the underwater cave system in an effort to safely recover the remaining victims.

The rescue mission is being coordinated by the Maldives National Defence Force, while the Italian Embassy in Colombo remains in contact with local authorities and the families of the victims.

Initial reports indicate the divers disappeared during a morning dive excursion near Alimathaa after failing to return to the surface by midday on Thursday.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fatal diving accident as recovery efforts continue in one of the Maldives’ most challenging underwater rescue operations in recent years.
