Tug Service Strike to Disrupt Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Zeeland Ports, Threatening Vessel Operations
A planned port strike will affect tug services, vessel handling and shipping operations at the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Zeeland on Friday, September 4, 2026. FNV Havens has called on union members at the seaports to join the coordinated strike, which could cause delays for shipping lines, vessel operators and port businesses.
The strike will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., covering the second assignment of the day shift and the first assignment of the evening shift. Svitzer, the tug service provider, has confirmed that its employees will take part in the industrial action. As a result, tugboat capacity will be reduced during the affected period.
Reduced Tug Capacity Could Delay Vessel Handling
The reduction in tugboat availability could lead to delays in vessel handling and may also affect terminal operations. However, the exact level of disruption is not yet clear, as it remains to be confirmed whether terminal operators will also take industrial action.
Vessel traffic handling will continue during the strike period. Operations will be managed as safely and efficiently as possible, with maritime safety remaining the top priority.

Shipping companies, port users and vessel operators with ships scheduled to call at Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Zeeland during the strike window are advised to expect possible delays.
