Ambassador Cruise Line Expands European Cruise Market With Germany Launch

Ambassador Cruise Line is expanding its European cruise business into Germany with the acquisition of Oceania Cruises’ 670-passenger Sirena, marking a major step into one of Europe’s largest cruise markets. The vessel will be renamed Ambella and will become the first ship of the new Ambassador Kreuzfahrten brand when the company launches its German operation in summer 2028.

The move broadens Ambassador’s cruise tourism strategy beyond its established UK and French operations. Based in Bremerhaven and Kiel, Ambella will offer an adults-only, fully German-language cruise experience, combining destination-focused itineraries, personalized service and an affordable-quality positioning aimed particularly at Germany’s mature cruise market.

Sirena to Join Ambassador Fleet in 2028

Ambassador confirmed on September 23, 2026, that it is acquiring Sirena from Oceania Cruises, a wholly owned subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

The 670-passenger cruise ship will not immediately transfer to Ambassador. Under a leaseback agreement, Sirena will continue operating for Oceania Cruises until spring 2028 before joining Ambassador and being renamed Ambella.

The acquisition will increase Ambassador’s fleet from three to four ships and provide the company with a dedicated vessel for its German expansion.

Ambella is scheduled to operate from Bremerhaven and Kiel during the 2028 summer season. The initial program is expected to run from May through September and will include 11 destination-focused cruises and two repositioning voyages. Planned destinations include Northern Europe and the Baltic region, together with selected itineraries to Southern Europe.

Germany Becomes Ambassador’s Next Growth Market

Ambassador is entering Germany with a specialized product rather than attempting to replicate the operating model of the largest global cruise companies.

The company identifies Germany as Europe’s largest source market for cruising, with more than 2.8 million cruise passengers annually. The German market includes large operators as well as specialist and luxury cruise brands.

Ambassador Kreuzfahrten will target German-speaking passengers with an adults-only cruise product built around a smaller ship, destination-focused travel and what the company describes as affordable quality.

Christian Verhounig, CEO of Ambassador Cruise Line, said the German expansion represents the next stage of the company’s growth strategy.

The company says the smaller size of Ambella will provide greater itinerary flexibility and allow it to visit ports that may be less suitable for larger cruise ships.

From UK Cruise Specialist to European Operator

Ambassador Cruise Line was established in 2021 following the collapse of Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company initially concentrated on the UK market, building its business around affordable, no-fly cruises. It later moved to an adults-only model and identified the so-called “silver market” of passengers aged 50 and above as an important customer segment.

Its first ship was Ambience, a 70,000-gross-ton vessel built in 1991. The company subsequently added Ambition, a 48,000-gross-ton vessel built in 1999.

Ambassador expanded into France through its January 2025 merger with Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). The French operation was subsequently rebranded Ambassador Croisières in September 2026. The French business operates from Dunkirk and Marseille during the summer season and also offers a Caribbean fly-cruise program during winter.

The acquisition of Sirena therefore gives Ambassador a third major European market alongside its UK and French operations.

Ambella to Combine Commercial Cruises with Semester at Sea

Ambella will have a second role outside its German summer cruise program.

Ambassador has entered a long-term partnership with the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE), the nonprofit organization behind Semester at Sea. Under the agreement, Ambella will host Semester at Sea programs outside the German summer season.

The program uses a passenger ship as a floating campus, combining academic study with international travel.

Ambella is expected to operate for approximately eight months each year for Semester at Sea, initially from September 2028 through April 2029. The partnership is planned for 10 years.

This creates a dual-season operating model in which the vessel will serve the German cruise travel market during the summer before switching to educational voyages for the remainder of the year.

A Focused Model for Cruise Market Expansion

Ambassador’s German strategy reflects a broader approach to growth within the European cruise market: targeting specific passenger groups instead of competing primarily through fleet size.

The company is combining several commercial elements—affordable cruises, adults-only travel, smaller-ship cruising, destination-focused itineraries and premium onboard services—to establish a distinct position in Germany.

The smaller size of Ambella is particularly relevant to the strategy because it can provide access to ports that are less practical for larger vessels. This can support destination-focused cruise tourism while giving the operator greater flexibility in itinerary planning.

The Semester at Sea partnership adds another dimension to the business model. Rather than operating the vessel exclusively as a conventional passenger cruise ship, Ambassador will use it for commercial cruises during the German summer and educational voyages during the remainder of the year.

For Ambassador, the German launch therefore represents more than a new route network. It establishes a new regional brand while expanding the company’s European operating platform and maintaining its focus on the 50-plus cruise market.

Ambassador has stated that its broader ambition is to become a leading European cruise company offering affordable quality for the silver market. The launch of Ambassador Kreuzfahrten and the introduction of Ambella are the latest steps in that strategy.
