DP World Expands UAE Port Infrastructure with Fujairah Container Terminals, Boosting Maritime Logistics and Global Trade Connectivity
DP World, Fujairah Port, UAE Ports, and maritime logistics are set for a major expansion after DP World reached an agreement in principle with the Fujairah Ports Authority for a 50-year concession to develop two new terminals on the UAE’s east coast. The landmark investment strengthens the country’s port infrastructure, enhances container shipping capacity, and provides greater flexibility across regional and international global trade routes.
The new DP World project will establish the Al Rugaylat Container and Multi-Purpose Terminal and the Dibba General Cargo Terminal on the Gulf of Oman. The expansion is expected to reinforce the UAE’s position as a leading maritime logistics hub by increasing container terminal capacity, improving supply chain resilience, and supporting growing demand across international shipping markets.
The Al Rugaylat terminal is designed to handle up to 2.5 million TEUs annually, together with 1.7 million tonnes of general cargo and 190,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs). Meanwhile, the Dibba General Cargo Terminal will add up to 3.6 million tonnes of annual general cargo handling capacity.
Both facilities will be capable of accommodating the latest generation of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), creating a new deep-water trade gateway on the UAE’s east coast and expanding access to international shipping routes.
Once operational, the development will increase DP World’s total container handling capacity in the UAE from 19.4 million TEUs to nearly 22 million TEUs. The project will also significantly expand the company’s general cargo and RoRo capabilities, supporting future growth in regional and global freight movement.
Construction is expected to take approximately 24 to 30 months, with development progressing in phases.
The new terminals will be connected to Jebel Ali through DP World’s inland logistics network and integrated with Jafza, extending the company’s end-to-end supply chain across the UAE. This integrated logistics model will enable more efficient cargo movement between ports, logistics hubs, and end markets while providing additional long-term capacity as Jebel Ali continues operating at high utilisation.
H.H. Sheikh Saleh Bin Mohamed Al Sharqi, Chairman of the Fujairah Ports Authority, described the partnership as an important milestone in Fujairah’s development as a leading regional maritime gateway, bringing world-class operating expertise and new investment to the emirate.
Essa Kazim, Chairman of DP World, said the investment reflects the company’s confidence in the UAE’s future as a global trade and logistics hub while strengthening a partnership with Fujairah that spans more than four decades.
Group CEO Yuvraj Narayan stated that the Fujairah development complements Jebel Ali as part of a single integrated global platform, providing greater supply chain flexibility and resilience for cargo owners.
