Hantavirus Alert on Atlantic Cruise Ship: 3 Dead as WHO Investigates Maritime Health Crisis

A serious public health emergency on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has triggered an international investigation after three passengers died during a voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde. Health authorities have confirmed that at least one of the cases involves hantavirus, a rare but potentially fatal disease linked to rodent exposure.

The affected vessel, the MV Hondius, is currently under scrutiny as global health agencies work to determine the source and extent of the suspected outbreak.

According to a statement issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday, at least six passengers have shown symptoms consistent with infection. One case has been laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus, while five others remain under investigation.

Out of the six affected individuals, three have died, and one patient is currently in intensive care in South Africa, WHO confirmed.

The organization also added that it is actively coordinating international evacuation efforts for two additional passengers who are still showing symptoms of infection.

Fatal Cases Confirmed on Board and Ashore

South Africa’s National Department of Health also confirmed that the situation involves a severe acute respiratory illness outbreak on board the cruise ship. At least two deaths have been directly linked to the illness, while a third patient remains in critical condition in Johannesburg.

A ministry spokesperson, Foster Mohale, confirmed that one of the hospitalized patients tested positive for hantavirus.

The first victim, a 70-year-old passenger, developed symptoms while still onboard the cruise ship and later died at sea. His body has been held on Saint Helena Island, a British territory in the South Atlantic.

His 69-year-old wife also contracted the illness, was evacuated to South Africa for treatment, but later died in a Johannesburg hospital.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the nationalities of the deceased passengers. However, reports indicate that the patient currently in intensive care is a 69-year-old British national.

What is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus infection is a rare zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through exposure to infected rodents, particularly via droppings, urine, or saliva. In severe cases, it can lead to hemorrhagic fever, respiratory failure, and death.

Maritime Health Alert Raises Cruise Safety Concerns

The outbreak has raised serious concerns over cruise ship health safety protocols, particularly in long-haul voyages crossing remote regions such as the South Atlantic.

Experts say this incident highlights the growing importance of maritime infectious disease monitoring, early detection systems, and onboard biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of rare but deadly infections at sea.

As investigations continue, global health and maritime authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further spread among passengers or port communities.
