HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean Showcase Advanced Maritime Technology at Gastech 2026
HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean are showcasing next-generation maritime technology, eco-friendly vessels, digital shipbuilding solutions and offshore technologies at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, strengthening their push into global shipping, shipbuilding and energy markets.
The two South Korean shipbuilders are participating in Gastech 2026 from September 14 to 17, where they will present advanced LNG carriers, floating infrastructure, digital technologies and clean shipping solutions to global shipping companies and major energy industry officials. Their participation comes as tightening environmental regulations and the rapid spread of artificial intelligence reshape the global maritime and energy industries.
According to shipbuilding industry sources on September 13, about 1,000 companies from around the world are taking part in this year’s Gastech, which is expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors. The exhibition provides HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean with an important international platform to promote their latest marine technology, green shipping and offshore engineering capabilities.
HD Hyundai Highlights Eco-Friendly and Digital Shipbuilding
HD Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Kisun will oversee the company’s participation at the event, joined by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering President Kim Hyung-kwan and key executives from major affiliates.
Five HD Hyundai affiliates , HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, HD Hyundai Marine Solution and HD Hyundai Electric ,will establish a joint booth to demonstrate technologies focused on eco-friendly shipbuilding and digital transformation.
A total of 30 official events are scheduled during the exhibition. These include technology certifications from global classification societies and the signing of memorandums of understanding with leading companies.
One of the key developments will be the completion of a design appraisal from Lloyd’s Register recognizing the design suitability of a next-generation liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system and a bow-located accommodation block.
HD Hyundai will also obtain approval in principle for a liquefied carbon dioxide carrier and a hybrid electric propulsion system. These technologies form part of the company’s broader effort to advance low-emission shipping, alternative propulsion and maritime decarbonization.
The shipbuilder will also hold a technology seminar on the world’s first three-tank LNG carrier, which was developed in cooperation with France’s GTT. Through the seminar, HD Hyundai aims to promote its advanced LNG shipbuilding technology and capabilities to international industry stakeholders.
Hanwha Ocean Unveils 60-Megawatt Floating Data Center
Hanwha Ocean will make its own major technology debut at Gastech 2026 by unveiling a physical model of its in-house developed 60-megawatt floating data center (FDC).
This will be the first time the company has presented the FDC, which it is pursuing as a future business, to global customers in the form of a physical model.
The floating data center has a modular design, allowing its capacity and power-generation methods to be configured flexibly according to customer requirements. The concept design recently received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), demonstrating its technical feasibility.
Hanwha Ocean said the key strength of the FDC is its ability to bring together the capabilities of the Hanwha Group across data centers, shipbuilding and offshore industries, power and energy, operations and maintenance, and security within a single business model.
The company expressed confidence in the competitiveness of the floating data center as it develops the technology as a potential future business.
The FDC also represents the growing connection between maritime infrastructure, offshore engineering, digital infrastructure and energy technology, as companies explore new ways to support the rapidly evolving digital economy.
Hanwha Ocean Presents Carbon-Free LNG Carrier
Alongside the floating data center, Hanwha Ocean will present a model of a 174,000-cubic-meter carbon-free LNG carrier, highlighting another major area of its next-generation marine technology and clean shipping development.
The vessel is being developed as a carbon-free electric propulsion ship powered by ammonia gas turbines. Its development aims to apply fully carbon-free technology that does not use pilot oil even during ignition.
The technology reflects the shipbuilding industry’s continuing efforts to develop alternative propulsion systems that can support the transition toward lower- and zero-carbon maritime operations.
For the global LNG shipping industry, the development of alternative propulsion technologies is becoming increasingly important as environmental regulations tighten and shipowners seek solutions capable of reducing emissions while maintaining the performance requirements of large commercial vessels.
South Korean Shipbuilders Target Global Maritime Market
The participation of HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean at Gastech 2026 demonstrates the growing competition in advanced shipbuilding, LNG transportation, offshore technology and maritime decarbonization.
HD Hyundai is using the exhibition to highlight its capabilities in LNG carriers, wind-assisted propulsion, hybrid electric propulsion and liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, while Hanwha Ocean is presenting technologies that extend beyond conventional shipbuilding into floating data centers, offshore infrastructure and carbon-free propulsion.
The two companies are also positioning their technologies for a global market increasingly influenced by environmental regulations, energy-transition requirements and the expansion of artificial intelligence.
With about 1,000 participating companies and more than 50,000 expected visitors, Gastech 2026 provides a major international platform for HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean to engage with global shipping companies, energy industry officials and other stakeholders.
