SeaDream Yacht Club Orders New Luxury Cruise Ship SeaDream III from China Merchants
SeaDream Yacht Club has ordered a new luxury cruise ship, SeaDream III, from China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding, marking the Norwegian cruise line’s first newbuild in 25 years and a major step in the renewal of its aging fleet. The 16,500-gross-ton cruise ship is expected to be delivered in 2029 and will expand SeaDream’s presence in the growing small luxury cruise market.
The SeaDream III is scheduled to begin its maiden voyage from Hong Kong, China, on July 10, 2029, before being christened in Tokyo, Japan, on July 21, 2029. The new vessel will be significantly larger than SeaDream’s existing SeaDream I and SeaDream II, while retaining the company’s focus on an intimate yacht-like experience and personalized service.
SeaDream III to Transform the Company’s Cruise Fleet
The order comes as the small luxury cruise industry continues to grow while SeaDream’s two active vessels have been operating for more than four decades. SeaDream I and SeaDream II have gross tonnage of 4,333 each and can accommodate 112 passengers each.
By comparison, SeaDream III will have a gross tonnage of 16,500, making it nearly four times the size of the existing vessels. Once delivered, it will become the largest ship in SeaDream Yacht Club’s fleet.
The new ship will measure 151 meters in length and accommodate approximately 200 crew members and 230 passengers. Its passenger capacity will therefore be nearly double that of each of the company’s current ships.
Despite its larger dimensions, SeaDream said the vessel is being designed around the same core characteristics that have defined its brand: an intimate atmosphere, yacht-style cruising and highly personalized service.
China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding to Build New Vessel
The SeaDream III remains in the engineering design phase and will be built by China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding in collaboration with European engineering and technology suppliers.
The construction project represents another step into the international high-end cruise market for China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding. It also highlights the increasing involvement of Chinese shipyards in specialized cruise ship construction for international operators.
SeaDream has emphasized that the new vessel will not simply be a larger version of its two existing ships. Instead, the entire layout will be redesigned as an evolution of the company’s established cruise experience.
Open-Air Design at the Center of SeaDream III
Open-air spaces will play a central role in the design of SeaDream III. The vessel will feature a spacious upper deck, a separate pool deck, indoor and outdoor dining areas and three water sports docks.
The ship will also have expanded spa, fitness and wellness facilities, providing passengers with more onboard options while preserving the relaxed atmosphere associated with SeaDream’s yacht-style cruising model.
Accommodation will be spread across five stateroom decks, with a wider selection of staterooms, suites and connecting rooms.
Four of the five stateroom decks will feature accommodations with private balconies, while 20 staterooms will not have private balconies. The new configuration is intended to offer greater accommodation choice than the company’s existing vessels.
The overall design reflects SeaDream’s effort to increase the scale and capability of its fleet without moving away from the personalized experience that has established its position in the small luxury cruise market.
SeaDream III Designed for Long-Distance and Destination Cruising
Atle Brynestad, founder and owner of SeaDream, said the new vessel has been designed not only for long-distance voyages but also to allow guests to explore destinations more closely.

He added that the ship’s specifications balance the ability to call at unique ports with global cruising capabilities while maintaining the highly personalized experience expected by SeaDream guests.
The combination of its size, passenger capacity and design is intended to give the company greater flexibility in selecting destinations while retaining the advantages of a smaller cruise vessel.
SeaDream’s Existing Ships Have Built a Loyal Customer Base
SeaDream Yacht Club’s two existing vessels have developed a loyal following because of their yacht-like experience and personalized service.
SeaDream I and SeaDream II have remained in operation for 42 and 43 years, respectively, in the cruise industry. Major refurbishments were scheduled for the vessels in 2023 and 2024, helping maintain the ships while the company pursued plans for fleet renewal.
Their long operational histories underline the durability of SeaDream’s small-ship business model and the loyalty of its customer base.
The arrival of SeaDream III will give the company a substantially larger platform while allowing it to retain the characteristics that have distinguished its existing fleet.
Previous SeaDream Newbuild Plan Was Cancelled
SeaDream previously announced plans to build a new cruise ship in March 2019. The company signed a contract with Dutch shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards to build one “Polar 6”-class cruise ship.
The vessel was planned to have a total length of approximately 155 meters and was originally scheduled to enter service in September 2021.
However, the order was canceled only a few months after the contract was signed.
The SeaDream III project therefore marks a renewed attempt by SeaDream Yacht Club to introduce a newly built vessel after a 25-year gap.
China Strengthens Role in International Cruise Shipbuilding
For China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding, the SeaDream order represents another breakthrough in the international high-end cruise market and adds to the company’s recently announced cruise ship orders in the international market.
The project also brings together Chinese shipbuilding capacity and European engineering and technology expertise in the development of a specialized luxury cruise vessel.
With delivery scheduled for 2029, SeaDream III will become the largest ship in SeaDream Yacht Club’s fleet and will introduce substantially greater passenger capacity, expanded accommodation and more extensive outdoor, wellness and leisure facilities.
At the same time, the company is positioning the new vessel as an evolution rather than a departure from its established model,combining luxury cruise travel, personalized service and yacht-style cruising with the greater range and capabilities of a modern newbuild.
