Shanghai Overtakes London to Become World’s Second-Largest International Shipping Hub in 2026 Global Maritime Index
Shanghai has officially climbed to the second position among the world’s leading international shipping hubs, surpassing London in the 2026 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index released on Friday. The achievement highlights Shanghai’s growing influence in global maritime trade, container shipping, port logistics, and international shipping services.
For six consecutive years, Shanghai had maintained its position as the world’s third-ranked international shipping center. The latest index marks a significant milestone for China’s maritime industry, reflecting the city’s expanding capabilities as a global shipping and logistics powerhouse.
The Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index, now in its 13th year, evaluates 43 major shipping hub cities worldwide. Rankings are based on three core indicators: port infrastructure and operational performance, shipping service capabilities, and the overall business and maritime environment.
According to the 2026 rankings, Singapore retained its position as the world’s leading international shipping center, followed by Shanghai in second place and London in third. The remaining cities in the global top ten include Hong Kong, Dubai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Rotterdam, New York-New Jersey, Athens-Piraeus, and Hamburg, demonstrating the continued importance of Asia and Europe in global maritime commerce.
The report notes that competition among the world’s leading shipping centers is no longer driven solely by port size or cargo throughput. Instead, success increasingly depends on green shipping initiatives, maritime digitalization, smart port technologies, regulatory influence, sustainable shipping practices, and the ability to allocate global maritime resources efficiently. These factors are becoming essential as the international shipping industry undergoes rapid transformation toward cleaner, smarter, and more resilient supply chains.
